"IoD Jersey Announce Winners of the Director of the Year Awards 2020" (Press release - 20 July 2020)

IoD Jersey and Gold Sponsor Appleby are delighted to announce the winners of the Director of the Year Awards 2020, which celebrate the achievements of individuals and recognise excellence in the business community.

With significant changes made to the Awards owing to the challenges of COVID-19, IoD Jersey has this year recognised three individuals in the Small-Medium Business, Third Sector and Start-up categories, as well as presenting a newly created ‘Chair Award’ for services to the Island.

The winners are:

· Chair Award: Keith Beecham, CEO, Visit Jersey

· Director of the Year: Start Up: Hannah Gray, Founder and Managing Director, Kojima

· Third Sector Director of the Year: Jane Moy, CEO, Centre Point Trust

· Small-Medium Business Director of the Year: Adam Budworth, Director, Grant Thornton

The winners of the 2020 Jersey Director of the Year Awards were selected by an independent judging panel chaired by Tim Crowley, Managing Director, La Mare Vineyards. He was joined on the panel by Alexia McClure (COO, Jersey Business), Tony Moretta (CEO, Digital Jersey), Gailina Liew (NED), Pippa Davidson (Founder, Lean-In Jersey) and Tom Hacquoil (CEO, Pinpoint).

As Visit Jersey’s first CEO, Keith Beecham was awarded the inaugural Chair Award for his strategic leadership and contribution to Jersey’s success in growing tourism. The judges felt that Keith’s leadership over the past five years has positioned the Island marketing body well to come through this unprecedented period and grow again.

Hannah Gray, Founder of HR consultancy Kojima, won the Start-up category for showing real drive and portraying a strong personal story in her entry. The judges commended Ms Gray for showing real leadership development that will continue to prosper.

In the Third Sector category, Jane Moy was victorious and the judges commended her strong leadership skills in transforming Centrepoint. She was heralded for taking all key stakeholder voices, including the children, into consideration and maintaining a strong vision and strategy for the future.

In the Small-Medium Business category, Adam Budworth from Grant Thornton was recognised for his achievements in making a tangible, positive change in employee engagement over recent years. The judges noted Mr Budworth’s clear strategy for growth and ability to successfully deliver global strategies at a local level.

Further details of the judges deliberations will be available on IoD Jersey’s social media channels from 20thJuly. Winners will be making acceptance speeches and they will be posted on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter throughout the week. If COVID restrictions allow, IoD Jersey plans to hold a belated Awards Reception on 3rd December to officially present the winners with their trophies. The Awards have been made possible due to the continued support of long-standing Gold Sponsor, Appleby, and Bronze Sponsor, HSBC.

Lisa Springate, Chair, IoD Jersey, says:

‘Whilst it has been a disruptive year for the Awards due to the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic, we still felt that it was important to continue with the categories that we could and honour all the entries that were submitted by selecting deserving winners. Whilst we have less awards than usual, they are no less important and it’s even more vital to celebrate strong leadership in times of adversity. I’d like to thank our sponsors Appleby and HSBC, whose support has enabled us to still go ahead with the Awards this year. The judges were extremely impressed with all of our applicants and winners. They are all an inspiration and they should be very proud of their achievements.’

Tim Crowley, Chair of the IoD Jersey Awards judging panel, says:

‘The quality was again of an excellent standard this year with each finalist displaying great examples of true leadership. They each clearly showed the qualities we seek to celebrate in the Director of the Year Awards. Despite all that has been going on in recent months and the very great challenges we still face, there has never been a more appropriate time to recognise and celebrate our Jersey Directors.’

James Gaudin, Jersey Managing Partner, Gold Sponsor Appleby, added:

‘Appleby are committed to excellence in leadership and are therefore proud to sponsor the Institute of Directors awards in Jersey for the eleventh consecutive year. Each year, the quality of submissions is indicative of the calibre of leadership demonstrated across all industry sectors. In an increasingly complex operating environment, Directors have to demonstrate a range of capabilities to successfully lead their organisations to success. We believe these unique awards recognise and celebrate exceptional leadership.’
