IoD Debate keynote speaker announced

Ambassador Ido Aharoni, founder of Brand Israel and a well-known nation branding practitioner, is to give the keynote speech at this year’s Institute of Directors (IoD) Jersey Annual Debate.

Ambassador Aharoni, who served as Israel's Consul-General in New York for six years, oversaw Israel’s largest diplomatic mission worldwide. A recognized international expert on country positioning and nation branding, Aharoni will discuss how Israel has identified and leveraged its brand identity and explore the importance of countries articulating their own brand in order to steer a safe course in the future.

This year’s IoD Jersey Annual Debate, once again sponsored by law firm Carey Olsen, is entitled ‘Future-Proofing Jersey’ and will take place on Thursday 15th September at the RJA&HS. Starting at 5.30pm with a drinks reception sponsored by Ashburton Investments, the event will explore whether Jersey has the right leadership, brand, systems and expertise required to steer a safe course and ensure a successful future for local businesses and residents.

A member of Israel’s Foreign Service since 1991, Aharoni was previously a Senior Advisor to Israel's Foreign Minister and Vice Prime Minister in charge of media and public affairs. Between 2001-2005, he served as Israel’s Consul for Media and Public Affairs at Israel's Consulate General in New York and the Tri-State area, having assumed the position several weeks prior to the terror attacks of 9/11.

Aharoni is regarded by many as the founder of Brand Israel in NYC in 2002 when he initiated the inclusion of Israel in the ‘BAV’ (Brand Asset Valuator), the world's largest database on brands maintained by advertising giant Y&R. In 2003 Ambassador Aharoni convened the ‘Brand Israel Group’, an independent group of marketing and branding specialists which served as the strategic foundation of the entire Program. In September 2007, Aharoni was appointed to serve as the nation's first Head of Brand Management in Jerusalem.

News magazine 'Algemeiner' named Aharoni among "Top 100 People Positively Influencing Jewish Life" in 2013, and in 2015 he was awarded the ‘Honorary Governor’ status by Tel Aviv University. He is a sought after public speaker across the world, and in 2013 was invited by Google to take part in the renowned speakers’ series ‘Authors at Google’.

As well as Ambassador Aharoni’s keynote, the Debate will also include two panel discussions which will explore how mega trends are likely to shape the environment in which Jersey’s public and private sectors exist. Under the guidance of moderator and renowned news broadcaster Alastair Stewart OBE, the panel sessions will also examine Jersey’s commitment to innovation, internal threats, the island’s use of resources, competition from other jurisdictions and the impact of international security.

IoD Jersey Chairman Chris Clark, said: "We are incredibly fortunate to be able to welcome Ambassador Aharoni to Jersey for our Debate this year, and we are thankful to PwC for introducing such a renowned speaker to us. His experience as to how another country has worked hard to pull together its overarching brand and used that to help it navigate a challenging environment will be invaluable to us here in Jersey, as we seek to understand our combined strengths, address our weaknesses and look to the future with confidence.”

Alex Ohlsson, Managing Partner of sponsor Carey Olsen, added: “Particularly given the UK’s recent decision to leave the EU, there is even more focus on how global political and economic developments are likely to impact Jersey and Ambassador Aharoni will undoubtedly have some fascinating insights in this respect. This year’s Debate is ambitious but should resonate strongly with all those in Jersey’s public and private sectors who are interested in our collective future success.”

The IoD Jersey Annual Debate will take place on Thursday 15 September 2016 at the RJA&HS from 5.30pm – 10.30pm and is open to IoD members and non-members, politicians and all islanders who have an interest and a view on the topic. Places and tables of 12 can be booked at £85 per person, including a supper, through, whilst further information is also available at the IoD Jersey LinkedIn Group and by following @iodjersey and #futureproofjersey on Twitter.
