The full line-up of panellists who will discuss Jersey’s future as an attractive place for business and to live at this year’s Institute of Directors (IoD) Jersey Annual Debate has been announced.

Across two panel sessions examining how mega trends are likely to shape the environment in which Jersey’s public and private sectors exist, panellists for this year’s Debate on Thursday 15th September at the RJA&HS include:

  • Senator Ian Gorst, Chief Minister of Jersey
  • Andrew McLaughlin, CEO, RBS International

Under the guidance of moderator and renowned news broadcaster Alastair Stewart OBE, the panel sessions will also explore Jersey’s commitment to innovation, internal and external threats, the island’s use of resources and competition from other jurisdictions.

This year’s Debate, once again sponsored by law firm Carey Olsen, is entitled ‘Future-Proofing Jersey’. Starting at 5.30pm with a drinks reception sponsored by Ashburton Investments, the event will explore whether Jersey has the right leadership, brand, systems and expertise required to steer a safe course and ensure a successful future for local businesses and residents.

Last month, the keynote speaker for this year’s Debate was announced as Ambassador Ido Aharoni, founder of Brand Israel and a well-known nation branding practitioner. Ambassador Aharoni, who served as Israel's Consul-General in New York for six years, will explore the importance of countries articulating their own brand in order to steer a safe course in the future.

IoD Jersey Chairman Chris Clark, said: "Being able to offer a good environment for a diverse business landscape is critical for Jersey, and we need to make sure we the right plans in place now to make the most of future opportunities and anticipate potential challenges. With panellists spanning the public and private sectors, we have a very strong line-up this year who I am sure will provide us with some real food for thought.”

Alex Ohlsson, Managing Partner of sponsor Carey Olsen, added: “Global political and economic developments will undoubtedly continue to have a real impact on Jersey, as the latest forecast from the Fiscal Policy Panel indicates. For this reason, having strong, innovative leaders across our government and in our business community will become increasingly important and I’m sure that the panellists will provide some fascinating insights into how bold leadership will be a key ingredient in safeguarding our collective future success.”
